Using simple craft materials of paper, glue and wire, I create “Vegan Taxidermy” sculptures to allow us to take time to observe elements of nature that are usually short-lived or fleeting: my paper plants and flowers never fade or die, my paper birds do not fly away. My more recent work includes larger scale, illuminated works, and pieces that can be used in installations, such as these Calochortus lanterns, to inspire a new sense of wonder for details of nature frequently overlooked, and to draw in those who might not normally find any interest in the natural world. I hope these lanterns can bring viewers the same sense of joy I have from observing native California wildflowers.
