Karen Fiorito is an artist and activist who has exhibited internationally and been featured in major publications such as Art in America, Hyperallergic, Art Forum and ArtNews. Her work can be found in books like American Women Artists in Wartime, Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today and The Design of Dissent. Fiorito uses billboards to raise awareness and cause controversy. In 2004, her “Dear America” billboard was the first to start the Grand Avenue Billboard Project in Phoenix, AZ. Since then she has done a “Shox News” billboard (2005) in Santa Monica, CA and over 20 billboards for her “Got Drought?” project (2015-present) in California, Arizona and South Africa. In 2017, her controversial “Trumpocalypse” billboard in downtown Phoenix (2017) gained international media attention. In 2018, she completed a permanent mural in Flagstaff, AZ called “UNITY”. This mural was depicts 5 hands spelling UNITY in American Sign Language with a rainbow starburst background.
